SnowNews 11/Jan

FRANCE The weather in France has been much warmer turning what should have been fresh snow into rain in many areas. The higher resorts are fairing better with some fresh snow falling throughout the week. The Three Valleys saw a dusting of snow fall in the higher resorts. The most snow was recorded at Val Thorens (70/90cm) where 8cm refreshed the pistes nicely. The Paradiski area also got a dusting of snow with 10cm falling at La Plagne (70/90cm) on Monday and 8cm at Les Arc (23/100cm) on Tuesday. Vaujany (3/60cm) and Les Contamines (20/70cm) both recorded 5cm of fresh snow on Tuesday. Unfortunately the high temperatures bought rain to Villard de Lans (10/15cm) and the resort closed on Tuesday. It has still not reopened.

EUROPEAN WEATHER OUTLOOK The temperatures in Austria are meant to drop tomorrow and hopefully some fresh snow will fall. The skies will clear for the weekend making for some great skiing. The mixed conditions in France look set to continue with mild weather but more clouds moving in over the weekend. It will be a predominantly sunny weekend in Switzerland apart from on Saturday when the clouds will set in and hopefully provide some new snow. Skies in Italy will be sunny with a few clouds over the weekend with crisp temperatures. The wonderful sunny weather will continue in Andorra across the weekend. The snow will keep on falling this weekend in Norway with a chance of clearer weather on Saturday. In Sweden re looks set to receive more snowfall over the weekend and into next week. Slen will be a little drier although some snow may fall on Friday and at the start of next week. It will be windy and cloudy in Germany with a chance of new snow. It will be bright and sunny across Bulgaria again this weekend. The winds across Scotland should ease for the weekend and hopefully more snow will fall.

Tudo sobre Val Thorens... "The Mountain"

Beginners
Get started on the green runs around the village and cruise around the Deux Lac chairlift. The more adventurous could try the Plein Sud chair, which offers access to the Méribel Valley.

Intermediate

Val Thorens is an intermediate rider's playground. There are plenty of pistes where it's possible to open it up with some high speed carves, and there are some great cat tracks to jump off in good snow. Cime de Caron is a likely spot for these. If you fancy trying your hand at some creative jibbing then head to Boismint area, where there are some interesting features to be found. Likewise the area around the Grand Fond Funitele.

Advanced
A bit of exploring up Cime de Caron and La Masse will soon open your eyes to the jaw-dropping amount of terrain on offer here - it simply beggars belief. A lot of the best runs are closely guarded secrets, so the best way to go is befriend a local or hire a guide. A trip down to Orelle is highly recommended, especially for its kicker building potencial.

Kids
Kids under five get a free lift pass. Bring poof of identity.

Flat light days
There has to be a flip side to the 'highest resort in Europe' coin, and it's this: there are no trees in Val Thorens. Your only hope is to head over to the Méribel Valley to play around on the Combes and Table Verte chairs in Mottaret.
